This alter can be viewed in The Davidson Library through November 22.
ISLA VISTA, Calif. — UC Santa Barbara’s Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) alter was created by student artists and their instructor Cherrie Moraga.
During their informal presentation, artists highlighted photos, cane sugar, and pan de muertos. Las Maestra’s alter presentation was followed by a reception and panel discussion.
Dia de los Muertos alters are Mexican traditions created to honor those who have passed.
This alter is in conjunction with the “Cultural Aura: 50 Years of the Self Help Graphics in East LA” exhibit in the library.
Materials from UCSB’s California Ethnic and Multicultural archives are displayed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Los Angeles Cultural Arts Center called “Self Help Graphics.”
A vigil and ofrenda alongside the alter will be held on November 1. Attendees are welcomed to bring a picture or offend for a loved one.
The sister exhibit – Cultural Cura – will be on exhibition until June 21.
